S.T. Dupont Limited Edition Lighters: Every Edition from 1989 to 2010
Every S.T. Dupont limited edition lighter from the Musées of 1989 to the Samurai of 2010, with the year, the model, how many were made and how to recognise one.
By Max Meijster · Updated 15 October 2026 · 30 min read

In 1989 S.T. Dupont released its first limited edition, and since then dozens have followed: lighters in Chinese lacquer, platinum, diamonds and even meteorite, inspired by everything from the French Revolution to James Bond. Each was made in a fixed number, and each lighter carries its own number out of that total. For collectors they are some of the most interesting S.T. Dupont lighters there are.
A complete overview is hard to find, because the information is spread over old catalogues, auction archives and private collections. This guide brings it together: every limited edition with at least one lighter from 1989 to 2010, with the year, the lighter it is built on, the number made and the design. Editions with only pens, such as Les Éléments of 1995, are not included.
At a glance
- First edition: the Musées, 1989, four Ligne 2 lighters of 1,000 pieces each.
- 63 editions with a lighter, almost all from 1989 to 2010, most of them built on the Ligne 2.
- Largest run: the Picasso of 1998, 6,000 Ligne 1 lighters. Smallest: the solid gold Shanghai of 2009, 18 pieces.
- Table lighters: from 1996 many editions also had a Jeroboam table lighter, made in 50 to 707 pieces. See our guide to S.T. Dupont table lighters.

If you have one with its box or papers, or know its story, we would love to hear from you.

How to recognise an S.T. Dupont limited edition
- Look for the edition number. Every lighter is numbered out of the total: four digits, a slash and the edition size. A few from our own workshop: Jubilé 0403/1500, Picasso 0065/6000, Medici 0549/3420, Maharadjah 1979/2000. The number is engraved on the base; only on the 1989 Musées does it sit inside the cap. It is the lighter’s serial number: limited editions carry no other serial number.
- Check the decoration. Each edition has its own design in lacquer, engraving or stones that does not appear on the regular collection. Some also carry a name, such as “Musée” on the base of the 1989 Musées or “Hong Kong” on the 1997 edition.
- Look at the box and papers. Limited editions came in their own presentation box with papers, often in the theme of the edition, like the black lacquered box of the Picasso.
- Identify the lighter underneath. Each edition is built on a regular model: mostly the Ligne 2, but also the Ligne 1, Gatsby, Line D, Urban, Maharadjah and the Jeroboam. Our guide to every S.T. Dupont model helps you tell them apart.
A number alone proves little. The number, the decoration, the base model and the papers should all match the edition. Our guide on how to spot a fake S.T. Dupont covers the rest, and for lacquered pictures with a Japanese look, see how to spot a fake maki-e lighter.
After 2010
S.T. Dupont has kept making limited editions every year. Two examples: for the Year of the Dragon in 2012 it made three collections, from eight Dragon Diamond sets with dragons sculpted by Philippe Tournaire to a Premium Ligne 2 numbered out of 888; and in 2023 it made a Declaration of Independence Ligne 2 of 176 pieces. We will add the editions after 2010 to this guide over time.

Buying a limited edition
A limited edition works exactly like the model it is built on, so it needs the same care and the same gas: the colour dot inside the refill cap shows which, and our S.T. Dupont gas refill guide explains it. Completeness matters for collectors: the original box, the papers and a number that matches them add to the value.
We service every lighter we sell and ship it empty, as the transport rules require. See the S.T. Dupont limited editions we have now, or browse our vintage Ligne 2 lighters.

See all limited editionsQuestions collectors ask
How do I know if my S.T. Dupont is a limited edition?
Look for the edition number, for example 0403/1500, usually engraved on the base, together with a decoration that does not appear in the regular collection. The original box and papers confirm it.
What was the first S.T. Dupont limited edition?
The Musées of 1989: four Ligne 2 lighters in Chinese lacquer on the French Revolution, 1,000 numbered pieces of each design.
What is the rarest S.T. Dupont limited edition lighter?
Among the editions up to 2010, the solid gold Shanghai with diamonds (18 pieces, 2009) and the solid gold Place Vendôme (35 pieces, 2008), followed by the 60 Diamonds of 2001 (60 pieces).
Which gas does an S.T. Dupont limited edition use?
The same as the model it is built on, for example yellow for a regular Ligne 2 and green for a Gatsby. See our gas refill guide.
Are S.T. Dupont limited editions worth more than regular lighters?
Usually, yes, especially in small runs and complete with the original box and papers. Condition, completeness and how rare the edition is decide the price.
Which S.T. Dupont limited editions were made for cigar smokers?
The Cohiba editions of 1992 and 2003, the six Habanera lighters of 1999, the Paul Garmirian of 1997, La Casa del Habano of 2003 and the Opus X editions of 2004 to 2006.
