How to Spot a Fake S.T. Dupont Lighter: A Guide to Spotting the Counterfeit Dupont Lighter

The Ligne 1 and Ligne 2 are the lighters most people picture when they think of S.T. Dupont, and that is exactly why they are the ones most often copied. Fakes turn up on eBay, Vinted and marketplace listings every week, usually priced well below what a genuine example sells for. Some are crude, but others are good enough to pass a quick look.

The good news is that a counterfeit almost always gives itself away somewhere, if you know where to look. This guide goes through the checks collectors rely on: the serial number and engravings, the dimensions and weight, the filler cap, the ping of the Ligne 2, and the lacquer and materials. None of them is conclusive on its own. Together, they will tell you a great deal.

If the lighter you are looking at has a Japanese-style picture on the front, read our guide to spotting a fake S.T. Dupont maki-e lighter as well. Those fakes work differently: the lighter is often genuine and only the decoration is false.

Serial numbers and engravings

Start with the base. Every genuine Dupont carries its own serial number, and on vintage Ligne 1 and Ligne 2 lighters it was stamped individually at the factory, character by character. The result is rarely perfect. Spacing varies slightly, a character may sit a fraction higher than its neighbour, and the depth is not quite uniform. On a vintage piece, that irregularity is a good sign.

Counterfeits tend to go the other way. Their serials are often engraved by machine, with identical spacing, even depth and perfect alignment. It looks tidier, but on a lighter from the 1970s or 1980s it is a warning.

The number itself is worth checking too. Dupont has never published a serial database, but over the years collectors have noticed certain prefixes appearing again and again on fakes. The best known is 4FK, found on a great many counterfeit Ligne 2 lighters. Others reported regularly include 05D, 06D, 1AA, 1AB, 1GM, 2JN and 2YJ. A serial starting with one of these is not proof, but it is a strong reason to look very closely at the rest.

Then look at the rest of the engraving. On a genuine lighter, “S.T. Dupont, Paris, Made in France” is cut sharply and cleanly, well centred and in the correct typeface. On counterfeits, the lettering is often shallow, uneven, too thick or slightly off-centre, and logos may be skewed or stamped at inconsistent depths.

Dimensions and weight

Genuine Ligne 1 and Ligne 2 lighters were made to consistent dimensions, so a lighter that measures noticeably differently deserves suspicion. The figures below are for the standard models. Some finishes, particularly heavy lacquer or plating, can shift the weight a few grams either way.

The filler cap

Unscrew the gas filler cap and look inside. On a genuine Dupont there is a small dot of paint, red, gold, green or blue, which indicates the type of filling valve the lighter uses. Counterfeit caps usually have none.

One caution here. Replacement caps without paint are also in circulation, fitted to genuine lighters whose original cap was lost. A plain cap therefore does not make the lighter fake. It only tells you the cap is not original.

The ping

Open a genuine Ligne 2 and the cap makes a clear, ringing ping. It was designed into the model and has become one of the things collectors know it by. The Gatsby shares it. Counterfeits rarely get it right: most produce a dull click, and some barely make a sound at all.

Don’t expect the same from a Ligne 1. Some examples do ping, but the model was never designed for it, and a quieter opening is perfectly normal. What a Ligne 1 should have is a crisp, precise action, with no looseness or grinding in the hinge.

Sound alone shouldn’t decide anything, but a supposed Ligne 2 that opens with a dull click deserves a much closer look.

Lacquer and materials

Dupont’s Chinese lacquer is one of the hardest things to fake convincingly. A genuine lacquer finish is built up in many layers and has real depth: smooth, glossy and almost glass-like, with colour that seems to sit beneath the surface. Most counterfeits use paint or a synthetic coating, which looks flat, uneven or slightly plasticky when you look closely. If the base says “Laque de Chine”, the finish should match it. The engraving on its own proves nothing.

The body tells you something too. Genuine Ligne 1 and Ligne 2 lighters are made of brass with a quality precious-metal plating, where many counterfeits use cheaper, thinner plating that more easily wears down or even chips..

Conclusion

No single check settles the question, and a good counterfeit may pass one or two of them. Very few pass all of them. If the serial looks too perfect, the engraving is soft, the weight is off, the cap is plain and the Ligne 2 won’t ping, you already have your answer.
