This Disclaimer governs the use of The Lighterhouse website and sets out the basis on which information is published and goods are sold. It should be read together with our Terms and Conditions, our Return Policy and our Privacy Policy.

2. Information published on this website
The articles, guides, dating references and historical information published on this website are provided for general interest. They are compiled from our own experience in the trade and from the sources available to us. Manufacturer records for the brands we deal in are incomplete, and in the case of S.T. Dupont and Cartier no dating records have ever been released, so certain questions cannot be answered definitively by anyone.
We take care to be accurate and to distinguish between what is established and what is our own assessment. We do not warrant that every statement is complete or current, and information published here does not constitute a valuation, an appraisal, or professional advice.
Where we give an opinion on a lighter that is not ours, whether by email, through the sell your lighter form or otherwise, that opinion is given in good faith on the basis of the photographs and information supplied to us. It is not a formal appraisal and should not be relied upon as one.
3. Condition of pre-owned goods
The Lighterhouse deals in vintage and pre-owned lighters. These are objects that have had a previous life, and that is part of what they are.
Every lighter we sell is inspected before listing and, unless the listing states otherwise, is serviced so that it functions as intended. Each listing describes the condition of the individual piece and is accompanied by photographs of that piece, not of a representative example. Where a lighter has wear, damage, a replaced component or a past repair, we say so in the listing.
Nothing in this Disclaimer affects a buyer’s statutory right to receive goods that conform to their description. Minor differences in the appearance of colour, lacquer or patina between a photograph and the object in the hand are inherent in photographing metal and lacquer and are not a defect. Anything beyond that, and anything we have failed to describe accurately, is our responsibility and we will put it right.
4. Authenticity
We sell only pieces we believe to be genuine and made by the maker stated in the listing. Every lighter is examined before it is offered for sale, and we decline pieces we are not satisfied with.
Where a piece is later established not to be authentic, that is a failure of description on our part and we will take it back and refund it in full. We do not disclaim responsibility for the authenticity of what we sell.
5. Statutory conformity and guarantee
A consumer buying from us has the rights conferred by Dutch law (Article 7:17 of the Burgerlijk Wetboek) and Directive (EU) 2019/771, under which goods must conform to the contract. Where they do not, the remedies available are repair, replacement, a proportionate price reduction, or rescission of the contract, as the law provides. Those rights are not limited to any period stated below, and nothing on this website limits or excludes them. Any statement that appears to do so is to be read subject to this paragraph.
What may reasonably be expected of a serviced vintage lighter. Conformity is assessed against what a buyer may reasonably expect, taking into account the age, price, description and second-hand nature of the goods (Article 7:17(2) of the Burgerlijk Wetboek). A vintage lighter is not held to the standard of a newly manufactured one.
A service restores a lighter to working order at the point it is carried out. It is not a permanent condition. Seals, gaskets and valve components are wear parts, and their working life after a service depends on how the lighter is stored, how often it is used, and the quality of the fuel put into it. A lighter left unused for a long period, stored in heat or damp, or filled with poorly filtered gas will need attention again sooner than one in regular careful use. That is the nature of the object rather than a defect in it.
We describe every piece individually and we stand behind those descriptions. What we cannot undertake is that a mechanism made fifty years ago will never again require servicing.
The Lighterhouse guarantee. In addition to the statutory rights above, The Lighterhouse provides a guarantee of six months from the date of delivery on the servicing carried out before sale. If, within that period, the lighter fails to hold gas, fails to light, or develops a fault attributable to the service work, we will put it right at our cost. Contact us first and wait for our instructions, as set out in our Return Policy, and we will arrange the shipping.
A commercial guarantee of this kind is additional to, and does not replace, a consumer’s statutory rights.
We should also say plainly that the six months is a stated commitment rather than a cut-off. These are old objects and we know them well. If something goes wrong afterwards, write to us. We would far rather look at it and find a solution than have you left with a lighter that does not work.
The guarantee does not extend to normal consumable items such as flints and gas, to damage resulting from misuse, dropping, or refilling with unsuitable fuel, or to a lighter that has been opened, serviced, repaired or altered by anyone other than The Lighterhouse after delivery.
6. Safe use
The items we sell produce a naked flame and contain flammable fuel. They are not toys and must be kept away from children.
Refill only with a high-quality, well-filtered butane intended for lighters. Do not overfill, do not attempt to refill near a flame, and do not attempt to modify a lighter’s fuel system. Store a lighter that is known to leak empty, and do not refill it until it has been serviced. The Lighterhouse accepts no liability for injury or damage arising from misuse, modification, or refilling contrary to this guidance.
7. Limitation of liability
Subject to paragraph 5 and to the paragraph immediately below, The Lighterhouse is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, including loss of profit, arising from the use of this website or from delays in carriage, customs clearance or import formalities that are outside our control.
Nothing in this Disclaimer excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury, for damage caused intentionally or by gross negligence, or for any liability which may not lawfully be excluded, whether under Article 6:74 of the Burgerlijk Wetboek, the rules on unfair contract terms in Articles 6:231 to 6:247 of the Burgerlijk Wetboek, or otherwise.
8. External links and third-party services
This website links to and relies on services operated by others, including payment providers, carriers and analytics providers, which are identified in our Privacy Policy. Those parties operate independently and under their own terms. We are not responsible for the content or practices of external websites, and following a link to one is at your own discretion.
9. Pricing
We take care to price accurately. Where an obvious error occurs, we reserve the right to correct it and, where an order has already been placed at a manifestly incorrect price, to decline the order and refund any sum paid in full. We will contact you before doing so.
All prices shown include any tax due. Because we trade in second-hand goods under the Dutch VAT margin scheme, VAT is calculated on our margin and is not shown separately on the invoice and cannot be reclaimed by a business buyer.
10. Taxes and import duties outside the EU
Orders delivered outside the European Union may attract customs duty, import VAT or handling charges imposed by the authorities of the destination country. These are payable by the recipient and are outside our control. We declare every consignment honestly and at its correct value, and we will not understate a declared value on request, since doing so is unlawful and would leave the parcel underinsured in transit.
11. Trademarks and independence
The Lighterhouse is an independent dealer. We are not affiliated with, authorised by, endorsed by or sponsored by S.T. Dupont, Alfred Dunhill, Cartier, or any other manufacturer whose products we offer.
All trademarks, brand names and logos are the property of their respective owners and are used here solely to identify and describe the goods offered, as permitted under Article 14(1)(c) of Regulation (EU) 2017/1001.
12. Amendments
This Disclaimer may be amended from time to time. The version published at this address, and identified by the date below, is the version in force.
