A Dunhill Rollagas from 1993 in silver plating, its body worked in a fine barleycorn pattern that runs across the panels and catches differently as the light moves over it. A smooth polished band frames the roller housing, a plain border against the textured field, and the two finishes together give the case more presence than a single surface would.

The roller is the reason the Rollagas has kept its following since Dunhill developed it with the Geneva firm La Nationale as one of the first butane lighters to work reliably. Rather than the flint wheel found on most lighters, a knurled roller sits under the thumb and turns to strike the flint and release the gas together, so the lighter opens and lights in one motion and does so quietly, without the snap of a conventional wheel. A gas control valve sets the flame, and on this example it has been set for a pipe lighter, giving a broader, softer flame suited to drawing a bowl alight rather than the narrow jet built for cigarettes.

This one is in excellent condition, showing very little sign of use and presenting close to how it left the shop. It comes complete with its original Dunhill box and papers, which is worth having for a lighter of this age and adds to what you are holding when it arrives. It has been fully serviced in our workshop, so despite needing to be filled before use, it is ready to be put to work the moment it reaches you, whether that is at a desk or held steady over a bowl of tobacco on a quiet evening.
