A S.T. Dupont Gatsby from the 1980s in gold plating, its two faces ribbed with the double gadroon pattern that sets this model apart from the plainer Ligne 2 it is built around. The fluting catches the light in narrow, even bands rather than the single sweep you get on a smooth lacquer piece, and it gives the lighter a texture you can feel as well as see when it sits in the hand.

The Gatsby shares its mechanics and dimensions with the small Ligne 2, and the slightly thicker cap-to-body proportions are the easiest way to tell the two apart at a glance. Lift the cap and it delivers the same ping, or cling, that collectors listen for, and the base carries two separate ports, one for refilling and one for adjusting the flame, so the two functions never interfere with each other. It is a mechanism built for daily use rather than display, and the Gatsby wears that ribbed surface as its main point of difference from the standard model.

This one is in excellent condition, with only the faintest signs that it has ever left its box. The original S.T. Dupont box and papers are included, which on a piece this age is worth having alongside the lighter itself. It has been serviced in our workshop and is ready to fill, so it can go straight into a jacket pocket and start earning its ping again.
