The Perfect Maintenance Guide for Your S.T. Dupont Lighter

S.T. Dupont lighters are far more than simple fire starters. They are finely engineered objects that combine mechanical precision with timeless design. Whether you own a classic Ligne 1, a Ligne 2 with its iconic “cling,” or an elegant Gatsby, proper care and maintenance are essential for preserving both performance and long-term value.

In this guide, we will walk through the fundamentals of maintaining your flint-based S.T. Dupont lighter, covering everything from safe refuelling practices to routine care and professional servicing.

Why Maintenance Matters

S.T. Dupont lighters are masterpieces of precision, crafted with delicate mechanisms and luxurious materials. Yet even the finest lighter can lose its brilliance without proper care. Routine maintenance not only ensures reliable performance, but also preserves the beauty and long-term value of your piece.

Because refueling, replacing flints, and adjusting flame height can vary by model, we’ve created detailed, model-specific instructions for every S.T. Dupont lighter we offer:

Before refilling your lighter, always check the coloured marker located beneath the refill screw. This indicates the correct gas type for your specific model.

Refilling Procedure
  1. Refill the lighter upside down: Hold both the lighter and gas canister upside down, then press the nozzle firmly into the refill valve for approximately five seconds.
  2. Allow the gas to settle: After refilling, let the lighter rest for one to two minutes before igniting it. This allows the pressure to stabilise and any excess gas to evaporate safely.

Take care not to overfill the lighter. If liquid gas begins leaking from the valve, stop refilling immediately.

When Should the Flint Be Replaced?

If your lighter no longer produces a spark, the flint may simply be worn out. In older examples, the flint can also become stuck due to age, residue, or accumulated dust inside the mechanism.

Flint Replacement Procedure
  1. Open the lid and turn the small gas shutoff wheel located inside the cap to close the gas supply.
  2. Slide the side release downward to open the flint chamber. Once opened, the flint wheel becomes loose, so take care not to lose or drop any components.
  3. Insert a new S.T. Dupont flint
  4. Slide the mechanism back into place until it clicks securely into position.
  5. Reopen the gas supply by turning the shutoff wheel back to its original position.

Adjusting the Flame on a S.T. Dupont Ligne 1 BS

Unlike later S.T. Dupont models, the Ligne 1 BS does not feature a dedicated flame adjustment wheel or screw. However, the flame height can still be adjusted carefully through the gas nozzle itself.

Flame Adjustment Procedure
  1. Locate the square brass nozzle where the gas exits the lighter.
  2. Carefully rotate the nozzle using the correct adjustment tool to increase or decrease the flame height.
  3. If necessary, precision pliers may be used, although extreme care is advised as the surrounding finish can be scratched or damaged easily.

Flame adjustment on a Ligne 1 BS should only be attempted carefully and in small increments. Excessive force or incorrect handling may damage the gas valve or ignition mechanism.

Before refilling your lighter, always verify the coloured indicator beneath the refill screw. This marker identifies the correct gas type for your specific model.

Refilling Procedure
  1. Refill the lighter upside down: Hold both the lighter and gas canister upside down, then press the nozzle firmly into the refill valve for approximately five seconds.
  2. Allow the gas to stabilise: After refilling, let the lighter rest for one to two minutes before igniting it.

If gas continues leaking after refilling or liquid gas becomes visible around the valve, the lighter has likely been overfilled. Allow the excess gas to vent before attempting ignition.

When Should the Flint Be Replaced?

If the lighter no longer sparks consistently, or if the flint wheel turns with very little resistance, the flint likely needs replacement.

Flint Replacement Procedure
  1. Push the side slider downward to open the flint chamber. Once opened, the flint wheel becomes loose, so care should be taken not to lose any components.
  2. Insert a new S.T. Dupont flint
  3. Slide the mechanism back into place until it clicks securely into position.

Adjusting the Flame on a S.T. Dupont Ligne 1 BR

The Ligne 1 BR features an integrated flame adjustment system built directly into the latch mechanism.

Flame Adjustment Procedure
  1. Locate the small notched adjustment wheel positioned on the side of the latch near the hinge.
  2. Turn the wheel clockwise to reduce the flame height, or counter-clockwise to increase it.
  3. Make small adjustments gradually, testing the flame after each change.

If the adjustment wheel resists movement, do not force it. Persistent low or unstable flames may indicate that the lighter requires servicing.

Before refilling the lighter, always verify the coloured indicator beneath the refill cap. Using the incorrect gas type can damage the internal valve system and affect performance.

Refilling Procedure
  1. Unscrew the refill cap located on the base of the lighter to access the refill valve.
  2. Hold the lighter upside down and press the gas canister firmly into the valve for approximately four to five seconds.
  3. Allow the lighter to rest for one to two minutes before ignition so the gas pressure can stabilise properly.

Only remove the refill cap itself. The nearby flame adjustment mechanism should not be unscrewed or disassembled during refilling.

When Should the Flint Be Replaced?

If the lighter no longer produces a spark consistently, or if the flint wheel spins without resistance, the flint is likely worn out or stuck inside the mechanism.

Dupont Ligne 2 / Gatsby

These models feature an integrated flame adjustment system located on the underside of the lighter, marked with “+” and “–” indicators.

Flame Adjustment Procedure
  1. Locate the flame adjustment wheel on the base of the lighter beside the refill cap.
  2. Turn clockwise to reduce the flame height, or counter-clockwise to increase it.
  3. Make only small adjustments at a time and test the flame between each adjustment.

No screwdriver is required for normal flame adjustment. Attempting to remove the central screw while the lighter is filled with gas can damage the flame control mechanism and should be avoided.
