These lighters have aged over decades, resulting in some internal wear that may have accumulated and will affect their performance, and there is nothing to be done about it. A small Ligne 1 from the 1960s in silver plating, carrying a fine crosshatched pattern across the whole of the body rather than the plain or barley finishes usually seen on these lighters. The grid catches the light in short, even flashes rather than the long sweep you get from barley or lines, which gives the case a brighter, more businesslike look in the hand. The cap has no engraved panel of the kind normally left for a monogram or crest, and in its place sits a small logo, worked directly into the design rather than added afterwards.
This is the Petit size of the Ligne 1, Dupont’s original lighter and the model the company was built on. The BS designation marks it as a Briquet Standard, the version made between 1959 and 1973 that introduced a gas shutoff lever on the latch and put Dupont on a standardised refill for the first time, a real convenience next to the lighters that came before it. The mechanism is the same one collectors still rate the model for today, a flint wheel and lever action simple enough to use without thinking about it.
What makes this particular lighter worth pausing on is the combination of that crosshatch finish, the logo on the front and the absence of the usual engraving panel, a set of details we have not seen together on any other Ligne 1 of this period. It points to a special order rather than a standard catalogue piece, though we cannot say for whom or on what occasion it was made. The lighter comes without its original box or papers. Condition is great, with only the light wear you would expect of a piece this age that was looked after rather than left to sit. It has been fully serviced in our workshop and is ready to fill and use.
