A Dunhill Rollagas from the 1980s in red lacquer, the colour laid smooth and deep across the body with the gold-toned fittings warming its edges. The flat-topped cap sits cleanly against the case, and the lacquer runs unbroken down the sides in a single tone rather than the domed treatment seen on some later examples.

The roller is what sets the Rollagas apart, and it is why the model has such a following among people who actually use their lighters rather than shelve them. A single knurled wheel under the thumb both strikes the flint and opens the gas together, so the lighter lights with one motion and does so quietly, without the harder click of a flint wheel on a conventional case. Butane was the point of the design from the start, doing away with the petrol smell of earlier lighters, and a gas control valve lets you set the flame to how you actually want it.

This one comes with its original box and papers, which is always worth having with a lighter of this age. There is a chip in the lacquer on the top of the cap, visible in the photographs, and we would rather you knew that going in than found it as a surprise. Given that, the piece is graded fair, a lighter better suited to daily use or to a restoration project than to a shelf. It has been through our workshop and is ready to fill and use once it arrives.
