A Dunhill Rollagas from 1994, finished in a lacquer that reads as lapis lazuli, mottled deep blue with the flecks and streaks that give the stone its character. The colour sits across the flat panel of the body in irregular clouding rather than a flat wash, so the lighter catches the light unevenly as it turns, darker in some passages and almost luminous in others. Gold plating trims the edges and the fittings, warming the blue at the seams.

The rolling wheel set into the side is what sets the Rollagas apart from a conventional lighter: rather than a thumbwheel you strike, it rolls under light pressure to set the flint and open the gas together, and it does so with almost no sound at all. A gas control valve on the base lets you set the flame height, and the mechanism is straightforward enough that it has kept several generations of these lighters running for decades. It is a design built for daily use rather than display, and this one has clearly had plenty of it.

This lighter comes with its original Dunhill box and papers, a nice detail for a piece of this age. The condition is graded good, so there is visible wear from genuine use rather than shelf life, the kind that comes from years of being carried and lit rather than kept aside. It has been fully serviced in our workshop, so despite the wear it is ready to fill and use as soon as it arrives.
