A Dunhill Rollagas from the 1980s in black lacquer, the flat-topped case giving the colour an even, unbroken plane to sit across rather than the shifting curve you get on the domed version. The lacquer takes the light cleanly, and the gold-toned plating at the base and around the cap gives the black some warmth rather than leaving it flat.

The Rollagas takes its name from the rolling wheel set into the side, which both strikes the flint and opens the gas control valve in a single motion under the thumb. It is a one-handed action, and a quiet one, the wheel giving an almost silent light rather than the sharper strike of a flint lighter. That mechanism is the reason the model has stayed in demand long after the petrol lighters it replaced fell out of daily use, and it is worth remembering this was one of the first butane lighters to succeed commercially, doing away with the smell of fuel that came before it.

This one shows visible wear from genuine use, which on a lighter carried through the 1980s is exactly what you would expect rather than anything to be wary of. The original box and papers are included, which is not a given on a piece of this age. It has been serviced in our workshop and is ready to fill and use, so whatever daily carrying it has behind it, there is plenty more ahead of it.
