A Ligne 2 in the larger Regular size, dating from the 1980s, finished in a tartan-patterned lacquer worked in blue with fine red lines crossing over gold. The pattern is laid out in a tight grid across the body and cap, and the effect shifts depending on the light, sometimes reading as a woven fabric, sometimes as pure colour with the gold ground glinting through the crossings. The fluted gold sides frame the panel neatly and pick up the warmth of the base metal against the cooler blue.

The Ligne 2 arrived as Dupont’s flagship line, slimmer than what came before it, and this is the size that gives the model its presence in the hand rather than the smaller alternative. Flame adjustment sits on the base rather than the latch, controlled by a screw alongside the separate port used for refilling, which keeps the striking action at the top uncluttered. Lifting the cap produces the sharp ping that the Ligne 2 was built to make, a sound that carries further than you would expect from something this size and is a large part of why the model has the following it does.

This one is in excellent condition, with only the lightest signs of use and nothing to distract from the lacquer or the gold. It comes without its original box or papers, but it has been fully serviced in our workshop and is ready to fill and carry, whether that means a pocket, a desk, or the table at dinner where that ping tends to get noticed.
