The story of the Dunhill Rollagas begins in Switzerland, where the Geneva-based company La Nationale SA played a crucial role in its development. Dunhill, originally a British luxury goods brand with a strong presence in the smoking accessories market, collaborated with La Nationale to create what would become the world’s first truly successful butane gas lighter.
The lighter was introduced in small numbers in 1953, but it officially appeared in Dunhill’s catalogs in 1956 and entered mass production in 1957. Unlike traditional petrol-based lighters, the Rollagas was fueled by butane, offering a cleaner and more convenient ignition method. It featured a precision-engineered mechanism, elegant styling, and high-quality materials—elements that would define its legacy.
Several key innovations made the Rollagas a standout product in the world of luxury lighters:
Butane Fuel System: Unlike petrol lighters, the Rollagas used pressurized butane, eliminating the strong odor associated with traditional lighter fuels.
